FORTUNA means “luck” in Italian, while INFORTUNIO means “injury.” Funny how joy and pain can lie so close together... not just linguistically.

Congratulations to everyone who delivered a strong performance in Birmingham. I genuinely couldn’t be happier for you. ❤️ Despite all the personal disappointment, we must not lose sight of how important every great performance is for the sport we love. Racewalking is facing some deeply concerning times right now and the outlook for its future seems to be getting bleaker by the day. Despite tough conditions and a course that was far from ideal, you showed just how exciting and compelling this sport can be. You also proved that not even an incomprehensible and unfair timetable can diminish racewalking or take away from the incredible performances of its athletes.

And to us, the ones who had to leave the course carrying both physical and emotional scars, I wish us a strong comeback, a fast recovery, patience and the strength to keep going. I’m an atheist, but I still believe in something greater than ourselves like karma or fate. I believe that, sooner or later, the effort we put in will be rewarded. Maybe Birmingham just wasn’t the right time or the right place for it yet. ❤️‍🩹

Keep going. Our time will come.

I could say that I’m simply grateful to have made it to the start line of a European Championship given my background, but that wouldn’t honestly reflect how I feel inside. I am absolutely devastated by what happened in the streets of Birmingham yesterday.

I know that I was given a spot because our federation’s B standard was relatively low. That’s exactly why I invested so much time, energy and money into my preparation. I wanted to prove that I was capable of achieving the A standard set by European Athletics.

This season has not been an easy one for me. I had to walk 2 marathons within 6 weeks to qualify and because of my very low training volume as well as my health and professional situation, I don’t recover quickly or well from these races. Still, I managed to get myself back on track toward the end of the season and felt ready to put together a fast race.

Around 26 km, I started to feel some muscular discomfort in my hamstring. I backed off the pace a little, even though I still felt very comfortable from a cardiovascular standpoint. Then, around 32 km, I felt a sudden, sharp snap while walking downhill that brought me to the ground. What I know for sure is that I injured my hamstring and that my offseason is now going to be much longer than I had planned.

I’m incredibly disappointed with the way things ended. I didn’t have many fans there in person, but I knew that some people back home were watching and cheering me on and that they knew exactly what I was hoping to accomplish. I hope your disappointment isn’t as great as mine.
