"Sapindus — the original botanical cleanser"

Long before modern shampoos, Indian hair care relied on plants.

"Sapindus" (also known as "soapberry, reetha, or soapnut") was one of the key ingredients used for cleansing hair and scalp.

Its dried fruits are naturally rich in "saponins" — plant compounds that create a gentle lather when mixed with water.

Traditionally, soapberries were used alone or combined with other herbs such as "amla" and "shikakai" to create natural hair cleansers.

A simple plant-based ingredient that has been part of hair care traditions for centuries.

Before the 1930s, hair was mostly washed with soap-based products — effective, but often harsh and difficult to rinse.

Everything changed with Drene Shampoo, introduced by Procter & Gamble in the mid-1930s. It was the first modern liquid shampoo made without soap, using synthetic cleansing agents called "surfactants".

This innovation marked the beginning of the shampoo we know today: lighter formulas, better cleansing, and a new era in hair care.

A small bottle that changed an entire industry.

The history of shampoo is a story of transformation.

For centuries, hair was washed with traditional soaps and botanical ingredients. But in 1903, Hans Schwarzkopf introduced the first branded powdered shampoo, changing the way people approached hair care.

Over the following decades, shampoo evolved from simple cleansing into a sophisticated cosmetic product — with liquid formulas, surfactants, conditioning ingredients, scalp treatments, and targeted solutions for different hair needs.

Today, shampoo is no longer just about washing hair. It represents the combination of chemistry, technology, and a deeper understanding of scalp and hair biology.

A simple idea that became a global beauty industry.

The History of Shampoo

Today, shampoo is an essential part of our daily hair care routine. But its story began long before modern bottles and cosmetic formulas existed.

🔥 The word “shampoo” entered the English language in 1762 from Hindi. It comes from “chāmpo”, meaning “to massage” — referring to the traditional Indian practice of massaging the scalp with oils and botanical extracts.

🔥 Long before modern cleansing products, Indian traditions used herbs and plant-based ingredients for hair care. One of the earliest shampoo-like preparations was made from Sapindus (soapberries) combined with extracts from various herbs to cleanse and nourish the hair.

🔥 In 1814, Bengali entrepreneur Sheikh Mahomed Din introduced this Indian hair-care ritual to Britain. His establishment in Brighton offered shampoo treatments that combined hair washing, scalp massage, and the application of therapeutic oils.

For many years, shampoo was not considered a simple beauty product — it was viewed as a therapeutic treatment recommended for scalp and hair concerns.
