"We don't have to romanticize everything.
We don't have to go out of our way to defend the status quo.
The "No Kings" rallies are objectively harmful for society. They enable and platform liberalism—and therefore uphold fascism, capitalism, nationalism, and imperialism.
We can glean some uses from these rallies because that's what The Struggle requires of us, but we don't have to pretend they are in any way a step forward.
We're WAY past incrementalism and reform.
These demonstrations are meant to stifle progress and preserve our current systems and institutions. The idea that we can ever fill up enough clipboards or hand out enough pamphlets to counteract the messaging of the liberals taking center stage is naive at best.
The people on the microphones are overwhelmingly millionaires, white elected officials, political hopefuls, career activists, tokenized minorities, and cis women inexplicably still wearing pussy hats.
And the people being gaslit about how this is the "slow pace of progress" are already dead or dying—domestically and abroad—from the crushing weight of oppression, poverty, and war. From trans folks losing their already insufficient rights, to Black and brown people being hunted by law enforcement, to the 20,000+ children slaughtered in Gaza, to the people of Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, Haiti, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, the Congo and more.
From the undocumented to the unhoused to the incarcerated.
They don't have the luxury of "wait and see" activism.
They don't have the PRIVILEGE of hoping for the best in two year's time.
These demonstrations cause more harm than good, because they neutralize our momentum and anger rather than harness it.
"Kings" are not the problem. And "We the people" is a hollow phrase uttered by slave owners in a shameful document full of lies and deception.
The criticism is valid.
The cynicism is deserved.
A starving man can find value in a discarded sandwich, but that doesn't mean he has to praise the dumpster he finds it in. These protests are the dumpster and many of us are starving for hope. It makes sense why we'd want to make the best of it. (Sorry it's late, I'm running low on metaphors)
