Spotted lanternflies first appeared in the United States in 2014 and have continued to spread in the 12 years since. The invasive species, now found across 19 states, feeds on plant sap, harms trees, and threatens the grape and wine industry as well as many other crops. While experimenting with ways to fight back against the insects, scientists have discovered a promising new weapon: milkweed.

Photos by @joelsartore | Beavers are incredible engineers. The dams they build help maintain a healthy balance within environments by controlling runoff, erosion, and floods. Because of this, their actions not only directly benefit humans but also create crucial habitats for various plant and animal species.

Before puberty, boys are more likely to have asthma, but after puberty, that pattern reverses. By adulthood, about one in 10 women in the U.S. has asthma, nearly twice the rate among men. Researchers are now getting closer to understanding that shift, including how hormones such as estrogen can influence airway inflammation and the severity of asthma symptoms.
