Cape Vindis, which is named by locals Kovrizhka (“Gingerbread” in Russian), because of the shape of the mountain. The cliff is 78 m high and about 100 m in diameter, it is connected to the mainland by narrow isthmus. The flat part of the mountain is famous amongst archeologists for many artefacts found here, which are the proof that ancient people used to inhabit it. ⁠

Nearly two-thirds of Sakhalin is mountainous. The whole of the island is covered with dense forests, mostly coniferous. Bears, foxes, otters, and sables are numerous, as are reindeer in the north, and musk deer, hares, squirrels, rats, and mice everywhere. The bird population is mostly the common east Siberian, but there are some endemic or near-endemic breeding species. The rivers swarm with fish, especially species of salmon.⁠
