Say out loud the word domination in respectable dog society, and people look at you like someone who showed up at a children’s party with a Kalashnikov. But the word itself did nothing wrong. The problem is with the people who tried to hide violence behind it. Like, “I train my dog with a stick, so that means I’m dominating.” Spoiler: no, you’re not dominating. You’re just an ….*sensored word here.*

Dominance is simply a structure of relationships with rules about who gives way to whom and when. Boring accounting, not a thriller. Wolves have it. A pack is a family where Mom, during mating season, puts her daughters under serious stress so they don’t go into heat. Stray dog packs have it too: everyone knows the order of access to resources, food and comfortable sleeping spots by heart. And you have it at home! if your dog doesn’t walk across the table while you’re eating. You don’t need a stick to dominate.

Problems begin when we give animals human morality. And the mistake works both ways. The black version: “The dog dreams of taking power, suppress it first.” The pink version: “Wolves live on respect and love,” “It’s not a dog, it’s my fluffy little baby.”

And the pink version comes at no smaller a price than the black one. A person who expects “understanding and gratitude” from an animal is not ready for an animal. That’s where bitten children come from: “But he always loved cuddles, what got into him?” That’s where dogs without rules and boundaries come from: anxious, twitchy, unhappy. For a social animal, living without structure is like living without gravity for us.

An animal is not cute. And not evil. An animal is an animal, with its own programming, and figuring out that code can sometimes be really difficult. The main thing is to understand that it is not you. It is another species. And what we need to figure out is how that species works. Everything has a cause and an effect. We don’t need to retrain animal into a human. We need to understand it. Isn’t that awesome?
