Prince Viseslav ruled over the Serbs from around 750 to around 780 and belonged to the first known Serbian dynasty, the Vlastimirović dynasty. His name is recorded in the list "De administrando imperio" or "Πρὸς τὸν ἴδιον υἱὸν Ρωμανόν" of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos, in the form ”Βοισέσθλαβος”. This earliest history of our people is told in this manuscript: "...after the death of the Serbian archon who defected to Emperor Heraclius, his son and then grandson and so on rulers from his lineage took over by inheritance. After a certain number of years, Viseslav (Βοισέσθλαβος) was born from them, and then Radoslav (Ροδόσθλαβος), and then Prosigoj (Προσηγόης), and then Vlastimir (Βλαστίμηρος)..." As mentioned in this document, before Viseslav, three other princes ruled over the Serbs, whose names unfortunately we do not know. It is most likely that the Serbian prince who ruled during the reign of Emperor Heraclius (610-641) was Dervan, mentioned in Frankish sources and the first Serbian and Slavic prince whose name we know. What you see in the picture is Viseslav's baptismal font, which mentions Serbian Prince Viseslav, as mentioned by Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus. Not only is it significant because it "confirms" Porphyrogenitus' claims and contributes to the accuracy of his script, but it is also considered "one of the most important monuments" of Serbian early medieval culture in our history. This baptismal font was made so that the Serbian people could be baptized into the Christian faith (at that time there was still one undivided Christian Church).
