Eight years ago, photographer Pete McBride @pedromcbride almost lost his Colorado home to a wildfire. This summer, he heads back to the flames. Across the American West, an intense fire season is stretching firefighting teams thin. In Colorado, the Gold Mountain Fire has burned over 38,000 acres, while the Aspen Acres Fire has surpassed over 100,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes. Decades of drought in the southwest, along with one of the worst snowpacks in recorded history this past winter in the seven-state Colorado River Basin, and record heat waves, have created the perfect conditions for wildfires to escalate.
